“UNTOUCHABLE SMITH”

An overcast end to May saw Ormskirk first XI produce a far from dull performance in their demolition of a new looking Northern side full of potential.

Winning the toss, Northerns J Cole decided they would take the new ball and put Matty Glayzers wicket through its paces. Glayzer and his opening partner Ford then set about building a total. Surviving a few minor scares the score ticked along nicely until Matty was caught at bat pad for 15 leaving Ormskirk 48-1. The senior batsmen then did little to support Ford who fell for a crisp 38 leaving the home side at an uncomfortable 66-4. Then some excellent concentration and commitment from Illingworth, the 2 other Glayzers, Griffiths and the seemingly untouchable Smith saw Ormskirk to 203 and Robinson had seen enough. Northern left arm spinner Baer claiming 6-85.

After the break Northerns openers Fletcher and Terry enjoyed an interesting battle with Caunce and especially Griffiths who sent down some lively deliveries having the pair dance around the crease for 14 overs. Griffiths at one point being spoken to by the umpires for his enthusiastic line and length. But all this was to no avail and with the shine disappearing fast from the ball Northern had weathered the storm and were sitting pretty at 68-0, a re-think was required.

Robinson then turned to the increasingly reliable Chris Smith to see if he had the key to unlock the visitors defences. A tidy over followed only spoilt by a half tracker that was dispatched easily to the mid-wicket boundary. The Ormskirk faithful might have been getting nervous at this point but any worries were soon to be put to bed as a quite remarkable spell of bowling was about to bring Northern to their knees. Supported well by Farrell, Smith proceeded to rip out the top of the Northern order reducing them from 68-0 to 73-3. But with Fletcher still chalking up regular boundaries the days work was far from done and the home boys still needed that determination they had shown in the earlier part of the day. With the score on 85 Ormskirks bowlers then took a further 3 wickets and the damage was un-repairable. Opening bowler Caunce then returned to the attack and after a brief flurry of shots Northern were all out for 107. Extras top scoring bar the opening pair and the red hot Smith bagging 6-20 to add to his 32.

Ormskirk should now march on with confidence, knowing that their young side are more than capable of meeting the tough challenges that lie ahead.

Northern 31-5-10

An emphatic victory for Ormskirk against Northern as Chris Smith rips the heart out of Northerns batting line up  with a career best of: 6 for 20 of 12.

Captains report

ORMSKIRK vs WALLASEY

On Saturday we encountered one of the more frustrating days of cricket as rain prevented any chance of a result at Wallasey. With constant rain lasting until about 3 o’clock we were fortunate to get any play in at all, as the Wallasey ground is one of the better draining grounds in the competition. This allowed us a start at around 3:20pm, just 10 minutes inside the cut off point of 3:30pm.

Having lost an important toss we were sent into bat on a lively wicket which provided assistance for the 2 Wallasey seamers, John Murphy and Chris Bourne. It was a struggle right through the innings and we ended 90 all out with only Fordy, Gavin, and Faz reaching double figures. It was a day where some batsman had rather unfortunate dismissals with John Pugh taking 3 excellent catches at short leg. Others however rather threw their wickets away when more application may have been in order.

We battled back after the break though and reduced Wallasey to 20-4 before John Pugh and Daniel Beaver put on 41 for the 5th wicket. Rain once again intervened at 69-5 with the game well and truly in the balance, but unfortunately for both sides the game was abandoned with both teams receiving 5 points.

There are some lessons to take from the game (especially with the bat!) and we are looking forward to putting things right against Northern on Bank Holiday Monday

Despite 78 from Ritchie Conlan and 28 by Luke Connolly, the visitors ended 28 runs short in what had been an exciting example of 20 over cricket.

v HUYTON 173-4 (20) (RS Conlan 78, Connolly 28)

Echo KO

Tonight at Brook Lane sees Ormskirks  first game in this years Echo KO.

We have always performed well in the echo, and no doubt Skipper Ian Robinson will be wanting to regain this trophy, however with a few names missing from our regular first team line up a good game is in promised against Huyton.

SNEAKY BACK FIELD TON GIVES 3RDXI VICTORY

SNEAKY BACK FIELD TON GIVES 3RDXI VICTORY

An unbeaten 108 by opener Martin Pickett got the 3rd XI back into winning ways against Ainsdale at the weekend. Having won the toss and electing to bat Ormskirk lost 2 wickets before Owen Griffiths joined Pickett at the crease. A partnership of 96 followed with some great batting and running between the wickets leading to Pickett bringing up his 50 in flamboyant style with a 6 over extra cover!

With Griffiths being dismissed after a useful knock of 31, big hitter Steve Quirk then joined Pickett at the crease. Quirk soon got off to a flyer in usual style with a few quick big boundaries. Pickett soon raced into the 90’s after blasting half a dozen 4’s. In the summer heat with tired legs 99 became a 100 as Pickett sprinted a quick single to mid-wickett thus bringing up his well deserved and hard fought ton. An Ormskirk declaration soon followed with Pickett finishing a cultured innings with an excellent 108* which included 15 fours and 2 sixes. Steve Quirk plundered 35* offering fantastic support at the end (and also looking the more tired of the two).

With the target set at 223 off 43 overs, opening bowlers Gary Taylor and Alex Berry soon got into the Ainsdale top order both striking in the their first overs. Matthew Leigh taking a great catch at slip off Taylor and lookalike Mike Lawrenson taking a catch at short leg off Berry. Some outstanding fielding from Ormskirk followed, in particular an athletic John Dixon at gully, but the highlight being Quirk behind the stumps taking a great catch again off Taylors bowling. The Ainsdale wickets tumbled steadily despite a some dogged resistance from Kev Riley (39) who was eventually outhought by Ashley Baldwin’s pshychiatry doctorate.

Taylor and Berry bowled significantly well taking 3 wickets a piece making short work of the Ainsdale top order. Owen Griffiths finished off a fine personal game taking 2 wickets with the ball. Ainsdale’s innings was brought to an end in under 100 runs by father and son Mark and Dan Bailee both looking impressivle spinning 1 wicket each.

A final and third catch for Captain Mike Lawrenson brought the game to an end and time to reflect on a well deserved all round team win. Highlight especially being Martin Pickett’s unbeaten 108 meaning a fine impression of ‘Fordy’ from Martin in the bar that night!
